Kick off the Semester with a Health Kick

Losing your health to a frenzied semester? If you’re guilty of skipping workouts to cram or eating too many Cheetos while studying, the Fit-4-Life classes at the USF St. Petersburg fitness center can help you alleviate stress, tone your body and lose weight.

Below is a listing of the fitness classes offered, accompanied by my interpretations.  Find one that suits you and don’t be afraid to try it!

1. Shoran Ryu: Learn swift punches and low kicks in this traditional style karate class taught by Steven Myers. Monday, Wednesday and Friday from noon to 1 p.m.

2. Yoga Stretch: Lost your flexibility? Bend and flex until you feel like rubber again. Taught by Ghislaine Leduc. Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon.

3. Cardio Kickboxing: Make your heart and torso happy with this intense workout. Taught by Allyson Hanson. Mondays from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon.

4. Pilates: Reach for the skies and stretch to your toes in this core strengthening class. Taught by Amanda Smith. Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

5. Shoto Kan: ‘Deep stances and powerful linear techniques’ simply describe this traditional karate style.  Taught by Jose Torres. Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

6. Capoeira: Learn self-defense and dance in this Afro-Brazilian martial art mix. Taught by Rebecca Davis. Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

7. Cardio Sculpt: Develop a more chiseled body using dumbbells and tubing in this cardio workout. Taught by Amanda Smith. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

8. Step Aerobics: Easy to follow lroutines make this step aerobics class a joy. Taught by Beth Lindenberg. Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

9. Power Yoga: Amp up your yoga routine to increase stamina and lean muscle mass. Taught by Sandra Baumstark. Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

10. Cardio Hip Hop: Groove to your favorite hip hop tunes. Taught by Emmalee Schmidt. Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

11. Stretch and Flexibility: If you are left with tight muscles after a long run or workout, this is the class for you.  Taught by Emmalee Schmidt. Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Please note that there are other activities such as Soccer Pick Up on Saturdays, noon, at the Recreation Field, and a special running clinic in September to help students train for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Oct. 4.
